Monthly flying stars

In short The monthly flying stars repaint the compass twelve times a year on top of the annual chart, so the sector to leave undisturbed changes every four weeks. Every month of 2026 and 2027 has its own chart below, with the sectors carrying the Five Yellow, the Illness star, and the wealth star worked out for each.

This month: August 2026

The Black 2 (二黑) sits in the center. Keep the NE sector (this month's Five Yellow) and the Center sector (Illness star) quiet, and treat SW (wealth star 8) as the month's sector for light and activity. Full breakdown on the August 2026 page.

How to read a monthly star

Two rules carry most of the practice. The Five Yellow (五黃) and the Illness star (二黑) mark the sectors to keep still for the month: no renovation, drilling, or loud activity, with metal objects as the customary drain in five-element terms. The wealth star 8 and the ruling Purple 9 mark where light, movement, and time spent are traditionally favored.

The layer matters most where it stacks. When a month's Five Yellow lands on a sector that already carries an annual affliction, tradition treats that four-week window as the year's most cautious time for that part of the home. Each month's page works out those overlaps against the annual chart.

The method, in the open

  1. The first month of a feng shui year (Start of Spring, around February 4) takes its center star from the year's animal branch: 8 for Rat, Horse, Rabbit and Rooster years, 5 for Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat, 2 for Tiger, Monkey, Snake and Pig. 2026 is a Horse year, so it opens with 8; 2027 is a Goat year and opens with 5.
  2. Each following month the center star drops by one (wrapping 1 back to 9), and the remaining stars fly forward along the same Lo Shu path as the annual chart.

Our figures are unit-tested against published monthly charts. A calendar showing a different chart for the same month is almost always starting the month on the first of the Gregorian month rather than on the solar term.

The flying stars are a traditional system with no scientific support. The full picture is on our evidence page.

Frequently asked questions

What are monthly flying stars?

Monthly flying stars are a twelve-part overlay on the annual feng shui chart. Each solar month a different star enters the center and the nine stars redistribute, so a sector that is calm all year can carry the Five Yellow or the Illness star for a single month. Practitioners use them to time when to leave a sector undisturbed and when to use it.

How are the monthly stars calculated?

The first month of a feng shui year takes its center star from the year's Earthly Branch: 8 for Rat, Horse, Rabbit and Rooster years; 5 for Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat; 2 for Tiger, Monkey, Snake and Pig. Each following solar month the center star decreases by one, and the rest fly forward along the Lo Shu path.

When does each feng shui month begin?

On the opening solar term (節), not the first of the Gregorian month. Boundaries fall around the 4th to the 8th and shift by a day or so year to year, so treat the dates here as the standard almanac dates rather than exact.

Do monthly stars override the annual chart?

They layer on top of it. Tradition treats the annual chart as the stronger, slower influence. The months worth planning around are the ones where a monthly affliction lands on a sector that is already afflicted for the year, which each month's own page works out.
